HIGHWAY 47

REVIEWS. (score out of 5)

Akira - *****

Dir: Katsuhiro Otomo

This Japanese animation film is spectacular and breathtaking. The quality and complexity of the visuals is outstanding with some very surreal, violent and fantastic images. The story follows a group of bike punks in the post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo, who through no fault of their own get involved in a government conspiracy to create beings with amazing powers. The script can sometimes be confusing due seemingly to the amount of story they had to leave out, there was no way they could fit the whole manga comic series into just 2 hours. Viewing the film several times will make things much clearer as you pick up the more subtle plot points.

Blade Runner: The Directors Cut - ****1/2

Dir: Ridley Scott
Starring:

Harrison Ford
Rutger Hauer
Sean Young

This film follows the story of Deckard (Harrison Ford), a “blade runner” who’s job is to track down and “retire” any illegal replicants. The cinematography and production design are superb, creating a dark, surreal, visually spectacular and absorbing futuristic environment. The script, though at times a little muddled, successfully develops questions surrounding life, god, human control and personal identities. Ridley Scott has a magnificent vision and does the script justice. The acting is also fantastic with Rutger Hauer putting in one of the best performances of his career. The emotional and tense final with Deckard hunting Roy is not to be missed.

Cop Land - ***1/2

Dir: James Mangold
Starring:

Sylvester Stallone
Harvey Keitel
Ray Liotta
Robert De Niro

Sylvester Stallone gives one of the greatest performances of his career as a sheriff in a New Jersey town that is occupied almost exclusively by NYC cops. Harvey Keitel has control over the area and when a Nephew of his gets in trouble it arouses the interest of an internal affairs officer played by Robert De Niro. The script has some great moments but it does seem to get a little routine here and there. The amazing cast make full use of the script and keep it engaging.

The Deer Hunter - ****1/2

Dir: Michael Cimino
Starring:

Robert De Niro
Christopher Walken
Meryl Streep

This film charts the lives of a group of steelworkers before, during and after the Vietnam war. The performances are all amazing and utterly moving with an awesome performance by Christopher Walken which earned him an oscar. The film has a huge emotional impact with many sorrowful, powerful and disturbing scenes. The cinematography is wonderful being both beautiful and haunting.
